Dude, Brian in icons 1 and 2 - that is NOT how you hold a baby! ;D Of course, abandoning him on the kitchen floor isn't very nice, either...

HEE! They really don't like each other. Not counting later when Brian thought Ethan hung the moon adlfjas. That scarred me a bit.

Brian's gonna be so frustrated when he has the chair but can't get at his cock. *snicker*

One light was always left on in the hallway. The empty coffee pot was always left sitting pointedly on the counter in the kitchen. Brian’s office door was always closed. And one piece on the chess board in Ted’s office would be moved.

It was a routine that started sometime after the unspoken bond was formed during Brian’s radiation treatments. Ted knew that he and Brian had always had a unique dynamic. Brian was realistic to the point of being caustic, but he always told Ted exactly what he needed to hear - no bullshit. And Ted liked to think that his loyalty and total lack of expectations endeared him to Brian, who was constantly being counted on to be one thing or the other.

The chess board was one of the first things Ted purchased with his office decorating budget. He remembered the morning he set it up. Brian came in to ask Ted for some report or the other and dropped off mid-sentence, his lip curling up into one of his more impressive sneers.

“Theodore. I know that you have a reputation to uphold, but I’d think the drab tie would be quite enough.” Ted looked up from his meticulously carved crystal bishop and blinked at the barb.

“What?”

“A chess board?” Brian grimaced, making “chess board” sound as disgusting as dirty diapers or hot, wet garbage.

“What’s wrong with a chess board?”

Brian rolled his eyes as if that were the most ridiculously obvious thing in the entire world. “In your office? Why not just have a neon sign made up that says ‘Hello, I’m incredibly boring.’ and hang it over your desk?” Brian lifted the castle Ted had just unwrapped and sneered down at it. “And crystal? Really, Theodore?”

Ted shrugged. “I thought it had some irony.”

A quirk of the eyebrow told Ted that while he may have been right, it still didn’t make it any less of an offense.

“Well I enjoy chess. It’s relaxing. Plus, this is a great set. It’s going to look fabulous on the table I ordered for it.”

Brian sighed and shoved the castle into Ted’s chest. “Are you even any good at the game?”

Ted pulled back in exaggerated alarm. “Good? I’m a little more than good. I was captain of my chess team in high sch - “

He was cut off by a flat palm in his face. “Please, spare me. I have too many things to do to need a nap at this time of the day.” Brian dropped his palm to his tie, smoothing it as he backed away. “I need those reports by noon, Theodore.”

“You got it, boss.” Ted gave a mock-salute as Brian turned sharply on his heel and strode from the office. He caressed the crystal castle before putting it in its place on the board, and then admired the set. “Perfect.”

Then he finished his reports by noon.

The next morning, his fourth at Kinnetik, he walked through the front door at precisely 6:45 a.m. The one light in the hall was on, the coffee pot was on the counter in the kitchen, and Brian’s office door was closed.

He strolled through the hallways, smiling to himself as he flipped on more lights, humming tunelessly as he hung his coat on his desk chair and straightened his pencil cup.

It took him four hours to notice that a pawn had been moved on his chess board.

“Boring, huh, Bri?” Ted chuckled to himself and tapped his finger on his chin. Then he made his first move.

By the end of his second week he’d started showing up at six on the dot, and he’d leave all the lights out in favor of getting to his office as quickly as possible. He wouldn’t even take off his coat before he’d take his seat at the table where the chess board was set up.

At the end of his third week he nearly jogged through the hallways and flopped down gracelessly in the chair. He grinned to himself and slid his knight into place. “Check mate.”

The next morning the board was reset, and the game resumed. Brian never said a word. Not that Ted expected him to.

OMG, SSS, I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!! Image This is EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY what I was envisioning! You are so much awesome, I want to smother you in kisses.

ALKJDFSLK I keep reading it, hee. It's so perfect. I mean, first off, it's set post-cancer and you know -- YOU KNOW -- what a whore I am for that storyline, much less the B/T BFFness. And then you give me the most spot-on Brian snark and Ted, oh, god, TED! Totally standing up for his beloved (crystal aldfja) chessboard - he ordered a table aldja!! - and then rushing into work each day to make the next move and never once do they discuss it again and aldkfjasl that is so them!!!

You = brill genius.

Me = your lifelong fangirl.

Thank you for my fic, SSS. It was a wonderful surprise. Image

I loved that Ted won and that nothing was said except the board reset. (So very Mr. Kinney)
